He was raised in the southern part of California and was a student at Huntington Beach High School where He was a leading player on both the basketball and football teams. Gonzalez excelled in both sports at the University of California, Berkeley. He was instrumental in leading the football team into the 1996 Aloha Bowl, where he broke the record of the school bowl by catching nine times. After a few months, Gonzalez led the basketball team to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA basketball tournament. After graduating from high school, he entered the 1997 NFL Draft. Gonzalez was picked as the 13th overall pick by the Kansas City Chiefs. Gonzalez was a player for the Chiefs from 1997 to 2008. The Chiefs sold Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons. After Gonzalez's first NFL season, he completed no less than 59 passes per season.
